The Social Justice Seminars at Avanti High School are designed to help facilitate the development of individual cultural competency and serves as a vehicle for students to meet the cultural awareness or diversity graduation requirement at our school. All students at Avanti are expected to demonstrate their effort towards developing cultural competency by completing a minimum of 15 hours (.1 credit) of diversity-related curriculum as a requirement for graduation.
Social Justice Seminars:
3 hour workshops or experiences offered by the school once a month seven different times throughout the school year. The workshops will introduce topics through film, lecture and group exercises and discussion, spoken word/poetry, and a series of guest speakers to address social justice issues as they relate to diverse individuals and groups.
Requirements:
1. Sign in on the roster (each time)
2. Attend the entire session AND participate
3. At the end of the seminar, compose a journal response to the prompt provided, then submit the reflective response to the office in a timely manner (defined as no more than a week following the seminar)
4. Keep a record of the Seminars attended, then, submit for credit upon completion of 15 hours. Any additional hours recorded may be submitted for Elective credits.
