Avanti will be having a blood drive Wednesday, January 17th, held in the boardroom from 8:00-2:00. We are looking for donors to sign up to donate, we will accept walk-ins the day of however signing up will guarantee you the time that you want. For donating you get an hour of service learning, cookies, juice, other snacks and knowing that you directly helped to save lives. Family and friends are welcome to come in and donate, so if any of your parents might be interested let them know to sign-up! 
Only those 16 years or older and over 114 lbs can donate, those under 18 years old will need a permission form signed by a parent or guardian! All donors must bring photo identification.
We are also looking for student volunteers to help oversee the canteen area and to act as runners the day of the drive, you will earn service learning for doing this as well.
Please remember to check in with your teachers to see if it is ok to volunteer or donate during your class time if you need to.

Conflict Resolution Workshop
All students (AM/PM) are invited to attend a student workshop on Conflict Resolution and Restorative practices facilitated by the Dispute Resolution Center of Thurston County. This three-hour workshop will take place on January 18th during the AM program (8:20a-11:20a) in the Boardroom. If you are interested, you are encouraged to sign up in the office. AM students should get permission from their teachers in advance to make sure you can afford to miss classes that day. (Velasquez)

Blonde Poison Field Trip
Let's go to the show!!! You are invited to join a special performance of "Blonde Poison", Friday January 26th. We will meet at Avanti at 11:15, walk to the Washington Performing Arts Center. Pantages Theatre Field Trip
"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!!!" Get a sneak peak behind the curtain with a backstage tour of the beautiful Pantages Theatre in Seattle. We will travel with some students with the Capital HS drama club to get a special look behind the scenes to the set of "Hamilton" and a bit of the magic of technical theater. $10 transportation fee. 2018 Teen Reading Challenge
January 1st-December 31st, 2018
Teens in middle and high school: Spend 2018 reading great books and be entered to win a downtown Olympia shopping spree. Read 12 books in 12 different categories by the end of 2018 for your chance to win! Stop by the Olympia Timberland Library Youth Services Desk for more information and to pick up an entry form. Snow Ball: A Library Dance for Teens
Saturday, January 20th: 6:30-9:00 PM
13-18 year-olds: Celebrate the chilly winter weather by dressing up in your favorite formal-wear, getting together with your friends, and taking over the library for an after-hours, teens-only dance! You'll have the chance to dance to a hand-picked playlist (requests will be taken!), visit the photo booth with your friends, enjoy a hot chocolate bar, and more! Tickets are free, and can be picked up at the Youth Services Desk starting Saturday, January 6. Sponsored by the Friends of the Olympia Timberland Library. This is an after-hours program, no other library services will be available.

Teen Open Mic Night and Coffee House
Saturday, February 3rd: 6:30-8:30 PM
Middle and high schoolers: bring your guitar, voice, writing, or any other performance art to the library for an evening of creative sharing. The lights will be low, the coffee will be hot, and the mood will be chill. Come be a performer and wow your friends, or support your peers as an audience member. Sign up for a performance slot at the door when you arrive. Refreshments will be provided. Sponsored by the Friends of the Olympia Timberland Library. The library will only be open to teens for this event. This is an after-hours program and no other library services will be available.

Avanti Social Gathering
Come join us on the Thursday, February 8th at Vic’s Pizzeria (on the westside by Grocery Outlet) from 5:30-6:30 pm. Eat pizza and meet people and have fun! (Griggs)

Avanti Talent Show

The Avanti Talent Show & Community Gathering will take place on Wednesday, January 24 from 5-7 pm in the Avanti Auditorium. We will have a potluck dessert and appetizer gathering afterwards in the boardroom. Students interested in auditioning, see Mr. Thedell. 

Breakfast at School!
Remember that Avanti offers breakfast for students. The cafeteria is open from 8:00 to 8:20 each morning. The school district is going to cut our breakfast program if our participation doesn’t increase, so let’s try save it for those in our community who are reliant on the breakfast program. Thank you! Breakfast is $1.50 unless you qualify for free or reduced lunch in which case it is free. See Maureen in the lunchroom if you have any questions.

Zero Hour Weight Lifting W/ Andy!
Want PE credit? New year's resolutions? Having started Wednesday January 3rd, I will be giving students an opportunity to do weight lifting on Monday and Wednesday mornings starting at 7:15am. All Students are welcome to join, and no weight lifting experience is required. I will be teaching weightlifting technique and exercise science to those who are interested. Students can earn PE credit! (Andy)

If you're a college/trade school bound senior and you have an IEP, see Heather in the counseling office for an application for the Jeremy Gidlund Scholarship. Scholarship award is up to $1,500.00. Seniors- If you are college bound (including community college) and are interested in a career in health care, mathematics, engineering or computer sciences, please see Heather in the counseling office for into on the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship- up to $22,500 over five years!!

Have you or someone you care about faced cancer? If so, consider writing a short essay for the the Cancer Unwrapped Teen Writing Contest. Prize is $1,000. See Heather for more info.

If you are interested in submitting a piece of art work for the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest, you can compete for a national scholarship with a first prize of $10,000. Students in any grade can apply. See Heather in the counseling office for more information. (Kazda)


Service Learning

Math tutors needed
Peer tutors needed for math Fridays from 12:20-2:20 pm. Help students create a better understanding of their Learning Plans and earn Service Learning credit at the same time. Connect with Nikki or Mr. Thedell for more details or to sign up. (Winkley)
